"This pedal is the distillation of several important principles in the signal chain for bass guitar. Compression, distortion, tone shaping, and blending sounds together," said Billy when EBS released its first signature pedal in 2013. The original concept remains the same, but additional features have gradually been added.

Since the pedal splits the signal into two parallel paths—a clean and a distorted one—it creates the effect of sound passing through two different bass amps simultaneously. The two controls, Clean and Drive, determine how you set the mix and combine the paths. For a tighter and more defined sound, you can engage the built-in compressor. The threshold setting for the compressor can be adjusted internally.

The phase switch occasionally feeds more bass back into the drive channel. The Boost footswitch can increase the drive level when needed.

The new and main feature of the Ultimate version is the high-frequency filter switch, Hi or Lo. This switch shifts the entire frequency spectrum of the tone filter up or down, expanding the pedal's possibilities.

The Hi setting adds a completely new palette of distorted sounds that were not possible to create with previous versions of the pedal.

Individual effect loops for each channel can be used to color the channels with external effects. The Clean Loop connector can also serve as a clean input if you have basses with two outputs. It sounds great when you run the bass through the Clean Loop jack while the mids/highs go through the main input, leaving the bass untouched and allowing the converter to process only the higher frequencies.

This version has inherited all the features from the Deluxe version (including the ability to swap the chip without soldering). However, the palette of sounds you can create is enhanced by the new Hi or Lo frequency filter to complete the package.
